News - Grand Master Lan seminar

Grand Master Lan seminar

On 25th June 2011, Grand Master Lan visited Tunbridge Wells to carry out 3 seminars for almost 200 students. The first of which was for white belts to blue tags, the next was for blue belts to black tags, and finally the black belts were able to benefit from Grand Master Lan's tutelage.

Grand Master Lan

With his roots in Vietnam, Grandmaster Lan is from Germany and has been training in Taekwon-Do since the late 1960’s. Between 1974 and 1986 he was sparring and patterns champion in WTF, WAKO and ITF systems.

An ITF Grandmaster he now travels the world with the ITF Technical Committee, helping them to conduct International Instructor Courses and Seminars.

Still active as a coach for the German National Team, he has helped to develop many European and World Champions in all areas of Taekwon-Do.

The colour belt sessions focussed on a dynamic warm up followed by the basic elements being broken down in order to gain an understanding of how breath control and relaxation form such an integral part of Taekwon-Do. The focus on breath was carried through to pattern work - which included Grand Master Lan demonstarting how he should be able to recognise every pattern just from listening to the breath.

A side kick is like having a loaded gun

As well as pattern work the black belts also carried out sparring drills - with particular focus on the front side kick. As Grand Master Lan explained, the front side kick is like having a loaded gun pointing at your opponent, ready to fire at any time they invade your space!
